The amount you do does depend on how unfit you are in the first place as it is important to build it up slowly and if you are unsure perhaps look at joining a gym and talking to an instructor.

By talking to a fitness trainer they can create a program whereby you shall get fit and start burning all that stuff off but in a way that does not put your body at risk. You should however be prepared to work at it and look at the long term picture rather than short term gain so try not to get bored of it within a couple of weeks.
